September 17 Deep in the Heart of Texas...For GoodIt's Monday evening and I'm tripping back to a mellow time in my life...recapturing some of that peace, and simplicity...listening to, believe it or not, Jimmy Buffet's Changes in Latitudes CD. I used to have the vinyl but left behind my awesome collection when I left Texas for MN. Today I bought the CD; have been wanting it for some time. It's such easy, laid-back music. The summer of 1977 was when I was exposed to it...that was a good summer, folks. So! Back to the tag line for this entry. Dave and I accepted a position just north of Austin, doing the same type of work except better $$, benefits, etc., no Budget trucks, and hey, it's AUSTIN! YEEEE HAAAAW! Back in Lance Country, back in The Heart of Texas, the cycling mecca of the state. We saw our residence today; it needs some work - new flooring, painting, cleaning, but the overall layout is wonderful! The kitchen is HUGE compared to where we were...so many cabinets and a window over the sink looking out into our back garden. We hope to be able to move in by next weekend. No hurry, tho' , as our new employer is putting us up in self-catering accommodations and we're cozy but comfortable. The facility needs some TLC big time, both in the office and out on the lot. But, hey, that's the story of my working life..."Here's your new desk/office/position - make it your own!" We have our work cut out for us, but we're excited and looking forward to it. We feel quite good about the organization we'll be working with, we see the residence as someplace we can really settle into and call home, and the area around here...well, we're quite near Lake Travis...there are TREES and UNDEVELOPED LAND and HILLS and NATURAL BEAUTY. What a freakin' concept. Today we prowled around getting the lay of the land a bit, some groceries, etc. This evening we ventured out a bit more to locate a bike shop I'd found on the Internet. Following a whim, I turned down another interesting-looking road and WOWSER! What a view ---- snaky, windy-twisty, and hilly...steep hills. It took us right up to The Oasis, a restaurant on Lake Travis I've been to a couple of times and Dave has been to once. We also saw the turnoff to Hippie Hollow...HA! The roads here just beckon to me...to be on the bike again. I'm so out of shape it's gonna be brutal but...well...as Lance has said, sometimes it is all about suffering. Up in Keller, I had no desire to be on the bike...the roads to me appeared dangerous with so much traffic and were in such poor repair...and we were literally working just about every day. I'm looking forward to having a bit of time for myself again. I can't say I've lost myself but much of my spiritual life, my inner me, has been dormant for quite a while, mostly because of working so much...being worked down to the ground with no energy (silly pun there) or time to devote to teaching or nurturing my inner self. Or my physical self, for that matter. Heck, this is the first time I've made an entry here in a while and the first of any real substance in quite some time. We're off until Thursday...thanks, boss, for giving us some R&R before we plunge it! Ahhh...Margaritaville...kewl. We were in Barnes and Noble this afternoon...and I could actually see myself getting back in touch with my "weird" books...studying again and doing some things. Margaritaville....this makes me smile every time I hear it. I hope life has been kind to my special friend of the summer of '77. I hope life is kind to you, too, dear reader. It's being gracious to us so far! Ciao for now! |
